The Professional Beauty team is delighted that our first live event of this year, the Professional Beauty Cape Town Expo, went off a treat and was very well attended. As our lead news story reports, there were a number of leading exhibitors in the beauty, nails, spa and aesthetics sectors and hundreds of visitors. In addition, the business seminar programme was sold out, with the demos on the live stage proving very popular. It’s clear that the Cape industry needs an event of this nature and we are already preparing for our flagship Johannesburg Expo at Gallagher Convention Centre in early September. Even before the industry (and economy) was battered by Covid, the winter months had always been regarded as a challenging time for salons and spas because clients tend to hibernate. However, as an article written by a business consultant will reveal, a change of mindset and some careful planning and strategising can help you to get on top of the winter slump.

For years now many salons and spas have been wanting to tap into the male demographic and this trend is certainly growing. In our trends article in this issue, we have important feedback from two male-centric salon chains about this no longer niche market.

We also include a useful article where leading facialists reveal their top tips, as well as a specific article written by an expert on how to treat African skin.
