The best beauty looks from the MTV VMAS 2024

September 11, 2024, the 40th MTV Video Music Awards honoured the artists currently storming the music industry, with an awards ceremony and live performances to celebrate the best in charts this year.

The ceremony was a joy to watch, with historical moments for the awards, like Taylor Swift becoming the most decorated artist in VMA’s history, and personal achievements like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter winning their first moon-men. Equally spectacular was the red carpet, with all the amazing beauty looks to appreciate.

Roan of Arc

Winner of Best New Artist, Chappell Roan, took inspiration from the Patron saint of France for her medieval look at this year’s VMAs.

Always sporting her signature pale complexion, the look was darkened with a purple eye, accented with gold lower lashes and inner corner decoration. Completed with a red wine (supernova) lip, makeup artist Andrew Dahling achieved gothic romance in spades.

Her sword nails, created by Juan Alvear, took the look to new heights.

The set consisted of two stacked layers of nail tips - short gold chrome square tips over silver XXL stilettos giving the appearance of a hilt and blade.

The artist is also becoming a beauty icon, searches for ‘Chappell Roan make-up’ have seen a 76.5% increase on TikTok in the last week.

Business-beautiful

American rapper and singer Doechii graced the VMA carpet with a stunning cat-eye and a glossy lip. Make-up artist Dee Carrion complimented the tones in the rapper’s outfit with a grey lid, made the centrepiece of the look by Doechii’s faint brow.

Her structured stiletto manicure gave an edge to her Thom Browne schoolgirl-inspired fit.

Doechii’s nails were created by Rachel Sun, who has become well known for her sculpted claws and for leaning into the ‘ugly beauty trend’ and ‘bogcore’ aesthetics.

A ‘Taste’ of Old Hollywood

Pop princess Sabrina Carpenter gave the VMAs a throwback in archival Bob Mackie.

Make-up artist Carolina Gonzalez achieved the dreamy look with a glowy base and a bright blush that has become a staple for the singer.

The glossy lip, radiant eye, and subtle smokey wing added to the vintage feel of Carpenter’s make-up, looking soft focus at all times.

She was also rocking an icy nail set, covered in rhinestones, to complement the glitz and glamour of her gown.

Nail tech Zola Ganzorigt used OPI Alpine Snow, alongside its Tin Man Can chrome powder to frame Carpenter’s ‘Song of the Year’ award.

Making a splash

South African singer Tyla stunned in a sunshineyellow piece from Area, which perfectly complemented the glow of her make-up. Covered head-to-toe in body shimmer, the glitter concentrated on the singer’s eyelids, with a bold black wing.

Tonally, the look read warm, with a peachy blush and natural, glossy lips.

Her rhinestoned nails furthered the sparkle of the look, with every nail featuring a different colour.

K-Popping off

K-pop star Lisa performed at the VMAs for the first time this year, and made a move on the carpet with a futuristic look.

She went heavy on the pink blush, keeping it sweet with a simple black wing and a natural rosey lip.
