PASSION, PERSEVERANCE AND POLISH
Kerry-Lee Badenhorst, owner of Kerry’s Nail Designs (now Four Girls and a Salon), has a journey defined by resilience, artistry, and dedication, evolving from a high school hobby into a respected brand in the nail and beauty industry.
Kerry’s story began in Pretoria East, where her interest in beauty was sparked as a high school student by her mother’s gift of a do-it-yourself (DIY) nail kit—a gift that would inspire a lifelong passion. After matriculating in 2008, she studied wealth management at UNISA, though her heart lay elsewhere.
In 2011, she moved to Cape Town for a finance career, balancing work demands with a growing love for nail artistry. By 2016, Kerry took a leap of faith, enrolling in a nail course at NSI in Table View. This pivotal step helped her cultivate her craft. She soon attracted a loyal client base.
In 2018, Kerry committed to nail technology full-time, focusing on both aesthetics and the health of her clients’ nails. Her big break came when she joined a renowned salon in Strand, renting a space and beginning her journey as an independent professional. This move marked the start of bringing her passion to life and laid the foundation for her successful career in the nail industry.
Launching during a pandemic
1 March 2020 marked a milestone as Kerry opened her first solo salon, Kerry’s Nail Designs (KND), in Strand. But, just three weeks later, COVID-19 forced businesses worldwide into lockdown. Unfazed, Kerry adapted swiftly, focusing on rigorous hygiene protocols and innovation. Her brother’s crafted desk shields helped create a safe environment for clients, enabling her to continue offering services amidst unprecedented challenges.
Reflecting on those early days, Kerry said, “The pandemic tested our resilience, but we rose to the occasion. Although it was challenging, our dedication, faith, and family support enabled us to persevere through the challenges.
With a young family to care for, Kerry tackled the financial pressures of lockdown with determination. She launched custom press-on nail kits, allowing clients to enjoy unique, handmade designs from home. Each set was tailored to individual nail shapes and sizes, transforming a challenge into an opportunity to connect with clients in new ways.
Competitions, home-care advice, and regular client check-ins also helped maintain relationships, fostering a sense of community and resilience during a time of uncertainty.
Rebranding and expanding the dream
By December 2023, Kerry’s salon had outgrown its solo setup. To meet the demands of her expanding clientele, Kerry moved the salon to Somerset West, rebranding it as “Four Girls and a Salon” to reflect her vision of teamwork and shared passion.
Now, Kerry leads a talented team that includes:
• Irene Janse van Rensburg: co-owner and operational manager, handling all administrative and financial aspects.
• Elza Wippich: a skilled nail technician whose artistry and dedication match Kerry’s own.
• Chante Louis: a lash and brow specialist who adds another dimension to the salon’s service offerings.
Kerry has also expanded her own skills to offer waxing, ensuring clients receive a comprehensive beauty experience. Together, the team combines its unique strengths with a shared commitment to excellence, diversity, and client satisfaction.
Kerry credits her salon’s success to never giving up and finding joy in the journey. “Success is not just about financial gain,” she says, “but about making people feel seen, cared for, and beautiful. The pandemic reminded us to look beyond the challenges and focus on the good we could bring into the world.”
Elevating standards
Kerry’s journey recently led her to become an NSI educator in the Western Cape, allowing her to pass on her expertise to a new generation of nail technicians.
“I’ve always wanted to teach, not just the skills but the passion and care that the job requires,” she explains. Partnering with NSI, she’s now on a mission to raise industry standards and inspire future professionals to approach their craft with dedication.
Advice to newcomers
For those entering the industry, Kerry’s advice is clear: “Love what you do, invest in quality products and never stop learning. Make each client feel special and build a resilient business by staying focused and adaptable.”
