A qualified practitioner (doctor or skincare therapist) will analyse the skin and build a personalised product together with the client. The prescription process takes around ten minutes to complete. The product will then be manufactured in the Esse lab and delivered directly to the client within 48 hours. There are thousands of potential combinations, so the production process has been largely automated with machines connected directly to the app.

Esse founder, Trevor Steyn, argues that off-the-shelf products are designed for the average client, limiting the ability to maximise the levels of actives due to potential adverse reactions. Additionally, there are cases where clients pay for actives they don’t necessarily require. Now it’s possible to create a product with optimal efficacy tailored to the client’s lifestyle, budget, and specific skin concerns.

The products can also evolve as the skin improves. The initial consultation will allow the client to reorder twice, covering the first six months of use. The client will then need to revisit the practitioner for an updated prescription that will generally be more cost-effective and will focus on maintenance.
