How the Barbiecore era has impacted nail services
The global invasion of all things Barbie, and hence all things pink, has been keenly felt in nail salons.
Barbiecore mania, inspired by the recent release of the hit live-action ‘Barbie’ movie starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and a host of other big stars, has more or less turned the world pink.
Professional Beauty UK’s Bethany Aspinall writes that new data from salon software platform Fresha found there has been a 508% year-on-year increase in the number of Barbie-inspired services offered by salons.
Barbie-core has shaped the beauty landscape in the last year, with more and more people choosing to incorporate pink into their nails and blonde into their hair, prompting consumers to overhaul their beauty routines. The new statistics, created from Fresha’s propriety booking data, also revealed that services tied to the Barbie universe, such as pink make-up looks and blonde hair transformations, have seen an 83% increase in bookings.

This revival is reflected in beauty enthusiasts exploring various thematic services and pink styles, adding a touch of nostalgia to beauty routines.
Salons have been capitalising on the craze by introducing Barbie-inspired offerings. For example, Proper Salon in London recently launched a limited-time pop-up with unique services including Barbie nail art and Barbieinspired tooth gems.
Consumers are not only looking at salon services. Google Trends has also recorded an increase in search interest, with a 323% surge for the term Barbie between July 2022 and July 2023.
Barbiecore has also been all over social media platform TikTok, with Barbie-related beauty hashtags including #barbiemakeup and #barbiehair generating 171 million views in the past month.
Some 23% of the three million posts under the #Barbie hashtag were created in the last 30 days.
The data highlights the impact of pop culture on consumer behaviours in the beauty and wellness industries, and how businesses can use these trends strategically to provide personalised experiences to their customers.

Demand for non-toxic nail care solutions drives market
New Technavio research estimates that the global nail care products market will reach $6.7755 billion by 2027. The availability of non-toxic solutions for nail care is driving the market growth. Technavio maintains that the growing concerns about healthy nails have prompted consumers to use non-toxic and natural solutions. It states: “The utilisation of harmful chemicals in nail products can result in health concerns like cancer, weakened nails, nail discolouration and skin infections. Several brands are focusing on offering non-toxic and natural alternatives to attract health-conscious consumers. These aspects are poised to drive market growth during the forecast period.” According to Technavio, the availability of counterfeit nail care products may hinder the nail care products market growth. “Genuine brand sales volumes are impacted by the presence of counterfeit nail care products, which pose health risks and are challenging to distinguish from authentic items. These counterfeits span various categories, including nail polishes, nail polish removers, artificial nails and accessories, and other nail-related products. Their availability at discounted rates aims to entice price-conscious consumers, thereby influencing the pricing strategies of key industry participants. These circumstances will pose a growth challenge for the market during the forecast period.”
