Redefining MASCULINITY

In the last decade, men pursuing aesthetic treatments as well as non-invasive procedures have emerged as a growing trend.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that the society has seen a growing presence of men pursuing plastic surgery.

ASPS provides some insight into the shift of perspective among men (Redefining masculinity: The growing appeal of plastic surgery among men | ASPS). One reason is because we are living longer and would like to remain looking young for as long as possible. Another reason is that it has become more socially acceptable for men in recent years to pursue treatments to regain or retain their youthful looks.

Male wellness

Apart from traditional surgical procedures, many men are drawn to non-invasive procedures that include fillers, microneedling, ultrasound, and laser. As is the case with women, demand for treatments that have minimum downtime is becoming more popular. Skin-tightening treatments are becoming better, safer, and faster, ASPS reports.

The growing market for treatments for men gives therapists and salons the chance to grow and add diversity to their client base. However, motivating men to visit the salon can be challenging.

Outdated ideals of masculinity are making way for more contemporary ones that include skincare, make-up, and hair removal. Gender neutrality in fashion and beauty is another rising trend helping to pave the way for inclusivity.

Historically, the focus of the male gaze has been on women, but it is now shifting inward, with a greater emphasis on the male market. This shift is a result of positive attitudes towards male treatments and the growing pressure on men to maintain their appearance. As is the case with women, prevention is easier to repair, and starting procedures earlier ensures that clients look younger for longer.

Social media and dating apps have also contributed to the trend to looking better. The hypervisual nature of interacting online supports the growing trend to see men looking their best.

Beard care, make-up, and hair regrowth products are all areas where men invest more than before. Skincare remains one of the most popular types of beauty care products for men.

Skincare focus

Products tailored to individual skin types and concerns, leveraging technology and professional care, are part of the shift towards proper beauty care for men. Men often lack the understanding that maintaining youthful appearances requires maintenance, unlike women, who are accustomed to it.

The Reuzel Refresh and Restore Skincare for men includes a calming, hydrating face moisturiser that works on all skin types. It boosts antioxidant activity while also brightening and moisturising the skin. The Intensive Care Eye Cream helps reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. It is quick-drying and non-greasy.

The Reuzel Clean and Fresh Shave Butter is an ultra-slick formula that naturally conditions and moisturises your skin for a super-close, knick-free shave. It is so simple, quick, and easy to use in the shower up to three or four times a week.

The Men’s Moisturising Cream from SIX is a two-in-one soothing moisturiser with after-shave skin softening and anti-shine properties.

With apple extract that acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, retains skin moisture, elasticity, and protects the skin from both environmental and free radical damage, this moisturiser also doubles up as an after-shave skin softener. The Men’s Shaving Face Wash is a versatile cleanser that addresses two needs at once. It is a deep cleanser with beard-softening properties for a smooth and gentle shave. It also has anti-inflammatory, healing, and repairing properties that are essential to maintaining your skin in your daily routine.
