WELCOME
Firstly, let me take this opportunity to wish all of our readers, on behalf of the entire Professional Beauty team, a wonderful festive season and a healthy and prosperous new year.
As our lead story in this issue reflects, beauty industry professionals are having to compete against an influx of unqualified, self-taught therapists operating in the industry. These individuals are believed to be drastically undercutting the prices of professionals and are likely using random products purchased off the internet. A lot of the industry stakeholders we spoke to believe that this problem exists because there is no regulation in the industry and that therapists should be licensed before they are allowed to operate. SAAHSP – The Professional Body for the Industry is aiming to become a statutory body so that it can regulate the industry, but it needs buy-in in terms of increased membership to achieve this.
In these tough economic times it’s necessary for business owners to tighten their belts, which is why we have included a useful article that provides tips on how to save money in your salon operations. It’s always useful to identify potential new markets as sources of additional revenue and an article written by a spa consultant pinpoints the menopausal woman as a client demographic that is under-catered to. The consultant explains how salons and spas can specifically target and treat such clients.
