Isa Carstens® Academy turns 45

Celebrating 45 incredible years in the health and skincare industry leads me to reflect on the remarkable journey that has brought us to this milestone, writes Isabel Carstens-Roos director of Isa Carstens® Academy.

Our humble beginnings in 1978 saw us running a one-year course with nine students. Today we offer three qualifications, accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), at two campuses and have three student hostels.

All this was achieved through 45 years of dedication to educating employable therapists aligned to our vision and mission. Our success is about the excellent teamwork, creativity, bravery, and self-sacrifice over many years of students, lecturers, administrative staff, parents and industry stakeholders. Thank you to all of you who have participated in this epic journey.

My heart is filled with deep gratitude.

While the health and skincare industry is dynamic and continuously evolves, the support and trust bestowed upon us by our stakeholders has remained consistent throughout the years.

With a sense of awe, we look back at the countless lives we have touched, including nearly 5 000 alumni. We have witnessed remarkable transformations as young students developed into outstanding career-driven entrepreneurs, somatologists and advanced aestheticians, creating national and international footprints.

Each step of this journey has been a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and the pursuit of quality training for our students.

We will celebrate our 45th year along with our students in the coming months and will be hosting symposiums in Pretoria and in Stellenbosch.

We embark on our next chapter with renewed energy, inspired by our past achievements, and driven to continue making a positive impact in the lives of those joining this exciting Industry for many years to come.

ELEVATING THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY THROUGH TERTIARY EDUCATION
In the dynamic world of beauty and aesthetics, the pursuit of excellence begins with education. This industry is flourishing in South Africa, offering diverse opportunities for skilled professionals. However, the importance of obtaining tertiary education from accredited institutions cannot be overstated. In this article Nouvique Academy sheds light on the significance of a structured education and the pitfalls of fly-by-night institutions that pose a threat to the industry’s integrity.
ONGOING TRAINING IS NOT NEGOTIABLE
As the world of beauty constantly evolves, the RefectoCil SA Academy believes that ongoing training and educating of beauty therapists is crucial for several reasons, for example, it contributes to the overall professionalism, competency, and success of individuals in the beauty industry.
OUR INDUSTRY NEEDS MORE GRADUATES WITH MASTER’S DEGREES
Lecturers at registered higher education institutions in South Africa are required to have an academic qualification registered at a higher NQF (National Qualifications Framework) level than the level they are teaching or facilitating. For instance, teaching somatology (NQF level 6) necessitates the lecturer to have an advanced diploma in dermal aesthetics (NQF level 7). Further progression typically mandates a master’s degree in somatology. The Isa Carstens® Academy has identified a shortage of graduates holding master’s degrees in this field.
